How to choose the right medical casters?

Medical equipment uses casters in many places, such as infusion rack for infusion, dialysis machine, ventilator, anesthesia machine, minimally invasive surgery car, ultrasonic diagnostic instrument, hospital bed and so on. Once the casters of medical devices fall off, crack, or even suddenly come to an “emergency brake”, the whole equipment may fall over and damage and hurt people, and the patient on the bed may fall to the ground causing secondary injuries, so it is vital to choose a suitable caster.
The main differences between medical and non-medical casters are the ability to apply common cleaning and disinfecting agents, greater safety, higher reliability, lower resistance to turning and rotation, etc.
Please refer to the following specific criteria when selecting a medical caster:
1. Power load: We strongly recommend that your caster single wheel load design standard is to move the equipment and the sum of the equipment load 1/3.(designed by 4 caster configuration per equipment)
2. The configuration of casters and tire materials:
A. Single-wheel structure is flexible, start force and rotation force is small, but if you need to get high load capacity, high stability performance to choose two-wheel design.
B. In general, the larger diameter casters are easier to roll and control than small wheels.
C. It is best to use soft material tread for hard ground, while hard material tread is recommended for softer ground or carpet wheels.
D. The different rotating structure of the caster bracket has a greater impact on the use of equipment, in general, the ball bearing rotating structure is more flexible and silent, suitable for low load requirements, often moving equipment. And double bead road pressing rotation structure load is relatively large, the use of good stability, suitable for less mobile medical equipment.
E. The environment in which the casters are used is also a key factor to consider, most casters use steel brackets, the surface is galvanized or plated with rust-proof treatment, we believe that the use of all-plastic or plastic-covered type of casters is a better choice for corrosive environments. See the attached table for the anti-corrosion characteristics of the common materials used in SECURE casters.
3. To ensure that the use of casters to achieve the best results, the choice of medical casters should fully consider the special characteristics of your equipment and caster installation. The installation of casters must meet the following requirements
● Correct and safe installation in the specified location
● The mounting position must be strong enough and have good attachment points
● Make sure that the rotating spindle of the bracket is perpendicular to the rolling ground of the wheel at all times
● Make sure that the wheel surface is perpendicular to the wheel pin
● If only universal wheels are used on the equipment, it must be ensured that they are of the same type
● Accessories on medical equipment must not interfere with the operation of the casters
The maintenance work in the use of casters should be done, the usual method of maintenance is: lubricate the shaft and rotating bearings, remove the debris, re-tighten the shaft or any adjustable accessories.
